Bye Bye Birdie Auditions Open auditions for the Arts in McNairy production of the musical, Bye Bye Birdie are being held 6:00 PM, April 11 & 12 at McNairy Central High School in the choir room. The choir room is located in C Pod, behind the Little Theatre. Multiple roles are available for teens and adults as well as children eight years and older. No theatre experience is required to audition but those seeking lead roles should be prepared to read from the script, sing and perform a few simple dance steps. Production dates for the show are June 10-14 at MCHS Little Theatre. Bye Bye Birdie is a Tony Award winning musical which pokes, good-natured, fun at the teen pop culture of the late 1950s. It is loosely based on events that transpired when Elvis Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army, sending his loyal female fans into hysterics. A team of AiM musical veterans will be responsible for bringing Bye Bye Birdie to the Selmer stage. Performing Arts Chair Bryan Essary will direct and Sarah Lemons will act as musical director.

Big Bad April 1-3 Get ready for Big Bad! A great cast of local youth has been assembled for this hilarious fairytale spoof in which the Big Bad Wolf goes on trial for his numerous fairyland infractions. The show will take the stage for three performances April 1-3 at the MCHS Little Theatre. Show times are 7:30 Friday and Saturday night and 2:00 PM Sunday afternoon. All tickets will be available at the door for $5.00 (students) and $8.00 (adults). A sold-out school show is also being performed exclusively for McNairy County students. Ask school administrators about further details or booking classes for future shows. Big bad is being directed by AiM board and performing arts committee member, Joanna Pitts. Joanna has appeared in numerous roles in the last several years and last directed the children's production, A Tale of Two Tailors. See the complete cast list below.

If you did not get selected for the cast this time, please do not let that keep you from trying again. Arts in McNairy will have many more opportunities for you to participate in a play. Big Bad Auditions February 17

Open auditions for the children's production “Big Bad” have been scheduled for 6:00 PM, February 17 at the Selmer Community Center. Production dates are April 1-3 at the MCHS Little Theatre. Children and teens age 5-18 are invited to audition and no theatre experience is required. Teen audition participants may be asked to read from the script. Younger actors may be asked to act out simple characters at the director’s request. There are more than a dozen speaking parts available as well as many smaller roles and extras. Technical crew positions will also be available for those who like behind the scenes work. Set painting and construction, lighting and sound technicians, costumers, prop and stage managers will all be needed. Inquire at the auditions about how to get involved with the stage or technical crew. We welcome parental help and involvement!

“Big Bad” is a whimsical, comedic, farce involving many familiar characters from well known works of children's literature. The perennial villain, the Big Bad Wolf, is being slapped with a class-action lawsuit by the countless quirky characters he has wronged in fairytale land. Hilarity ensues as prosecutor, Little Red Riding Hood, presents her case with supporting testimony by the likes of the Three Little Pigs et al. The surprise verdict will delight audiences of all ages. Big Bad is being directed by AiM theatre veteran Joanna Pitts. Joanna last directed the original script A Tale of Two Tailors in 2010. Photo Contest Now Accepting Entries

The AiM Visual Arts Committee begins accepting entries for the annual amateur photography contest and show this month. The contest is open to everyone regardless of age. Only the panel of judges and professional photographers are not eligible for participation. There is a $10 fee for each of the first three entries and $5 fee for every entry thereafter. Contestants can enter as many photos as they like. Please pay by check or money order payable to Arts in McNairy.

Deadline for submissions is 4:00 PM March 11, 2011 at the UTM McNairy Center in Selmer. Mail in entries must be postmarked by March 7 to be considered. An opening reception and awards ceremony for all artists and their guests will take place 2:00 PM-4:00 PM Sunday March 13 at the UTM Center. Participants must agree to have their work on display as part of the photography show at the UTM Center through April 13 and possibly published in local news media or the AiM newsletter.

There will be a $100 prize for one Best in Show entry. $50 first place, $25 second place and third place (as well as honorable mention) ribbons will be awarded in the following seven categories: natural landscape; architectural landscape; people; pets, animals or wildlife; black and white (any subject); digitally enhanced, edited or manipulated images; McNairy County (taken inside the county). Winners will be contacted by phone prior to the awards reception.

Entries should be mailed to the attention of contest/show coordinator, George Souders, c/o AiM Photo Contest, U.T. Martin Selmer, 1269 Tennessee Ave., Selmer, TN 38375. Entry forms (or equivalent information) should be affixed to the back of each photo. Entry forms are available at UTM Selmer, Village Coffee House, Selmer Chiropractic Center and Wal-Mart in Selmer or the one above may be downloaded and printed. Copies are acceptable. Name, address, phone number, photo title, date and location of photo, category of entry (listed above) and applicable fees must accompany all entries. Include the price only if you want to sell the photo. All entries must be picked up at the UTM Center at the conclusion of the show on April 13, 2011.

• Photos must have been taken since the year 2007
• Photos can be taken anywhere except those entered in the McNairy County category
• Photos must be submitted in 8x10 or 5x7 format
• Photos must be matted (preferably in white)
• Photos must be unframed

• Photos that have received awards in past AiM contests are not eligible for the 2011 contest

Call to Artists

Project: 20’x100’ local musical heritage themed outdoor mural
Location: Downtown Selmer, Tennessee
Deadline: January 14, 2011

Project Overview
Arts in McNairy, the arts council of McNairy County TN, is seeking proposals for an approximately 20’x100’, outdoor, mural as part of an ongoing public art program in downtown Selmer, TN. Previous project installations are shown above. The mural will become part of a downtown walking trail honoring the rich musical heritage of McNairy County TN and must reflect that theme.

Timeline
Deadline for proposal submission is January 14, 2011. Muralist may begin work no earlier than July 1, 2011 and the project must be completed by June 1, 2012. Dedication and unveiling will be in conjunction with the 2012 Rockabilly Highway Revival on the second weekend in June. The artist selected for the project will be required to attend.

Submission Guidelines
All proposal submissions must include: 1) Artist’s resume and current contact information; 2) List of professional references; 3) A one to two page letter detailing the artist’s mural concept and interest in the project; 4) A CD with high resolution JPG files that are representative of the artist’s work; 5) A list of explanatory notes correlated by number with each submitted image; 6) A cost estimate for completion of the project not to exceed the budgeted $15,000; 7) Optional supplemental materials or preliminary sketches; 8) A self addressed, postage paid, envelope for the return of all submitted materials (only if return is required). Selection Criteria
Tennessee artists will be given first consideration. An ad hoc committee composed of members of the Arts in McNairy visual arts; heritage and culture committees and community representatives will select an artist to complete the project. Selection will be based in part on: 1) Quality and compatibility of submitted sample works with the project; 2) Completeness of requested submission materials; 3) Originality of overall concept; 4) Appropriateness of the work for general audiences and relevance of subject to the musical heritage theme; 5) Estimated cost of the project; 6) Proven ability of the artist, by references, to complete projects on time and within budget.

Terms
Arts in McNairy will accept no responsibility for loss of or damage to submitted materials. All costs incurred during the submission process will be absorbed by respondents. Artists will agree to all terms of this call as well as all other contractual terms set forth by Arts in McNairy for the project herein described. The artist will further agree to accept lump sum payment based on their proposal bid on completion of the project. Travel expenses, rental fees, shipping and material costs, installation fees and all other miscellaneous fees should be included in the budget as these will not otherwise be considered.

Calling All Singers!

The Arts in McNairy Holiday Singers will be rehearsing through November for a December 2, 2010 performance at Lakeview Baptist Church. The annual concert has become something of a holiday tradition for McNairy County attracting more than a hundred local vocalists for the community chorus as well as large audiences for the performance. The community chorus is open to everyone but participants must be able to read vocal scores or quickly memorize vocal parts from the program CD. Soloists and vocal ensembles may be selected from among chorus members. Rehearsals are scheduled for 6:00 PM, Tuesday evenings through the month of November with the performance at 7:00 PM on the first Thursday of December. Arts in McNairy announces two open audition dates for the Pulitzer Prize winning play Our Town 6:00 PM, October 19th and 21st at the Selmer Community Center. The well known stage play by American playwright Thornton Wilder calls for a large cast of actors from youth to adult and has seven principle characters along with many other speaking roles. Bethel Springs Quilt Show
October 15 & 16

Fall is a great time to visit McNairy County with a festival or cultural event of some description taking place virtually every weekend between September and Thanksgiving. Last month, the Broomcorn celebrated a landmark 15th year with more artists and a larger audience than ever before. This month, it is the annual Quilt show's turn.

The McNairy County Quilt Show, "All For the Love of Quilting," began in Adamsville in 1980 and within a few years was adopted by the Busy Bee Quilters who moved it to Bethel Springs where it has remained ever since. Visitors to Bethel Springs will notice that the welcome signs label the town, "The Quilting Capital of Tennessee." This is no bluff! Bethel Springs has a long and rich quilting tradition with two active quilting groups working in the area. The Busy Bees have primarily sponsored the quilt show as an outreach for the The Springs UPC while continuing to quilt and promote the craft as a part of the County's cultural legacy. The Needles-n-Pins Quilters who work weekly at the Bethel Springs Community Center have been more engaged in education, participating in area cultural festivals and selling quilts to help support civic activities. The annual quilt show and sale is the town's biggest annual draw.

As the show has grown, so too have the entrants and the variety of quilts on display. The show offers theme rooms with quilts connected by technique, family tradition and various other categories. Traditional and antique quilts as well as more contemporary forms and art quilts are all included. This year Arts in McNairy is honored to have a room dedicated to the organization's mission to preserve and promote the culture of McNairy County. Additionally, an antique tractor show will take place in the parking area and the Needles-n-Pins Quilters will be demonstrating and selling quilts along with several other types of locally made crafts in the gymnasium. Lunch is also available.

The 30th Annual McNairy County Quilt Show and Sale will be held at the Springs United Pentecostal Church, 3591 Main Street, Bethel Springs, Tennessee. The show is open 8:00 am - 6:00 pm Friday October 15 and 8:00 am - 3:00 pm Saturday October 16. Viewers choice award is announced at the conclusion of the show on Saturday. There is no admission charge for the quilt and craft sale and the quilt show in the main building is only $5.00. Fall Artisan Trail
Meeting Scheduled

The Arts in McNairy Artisan Trail fall studio tour is just around the corner. The trail provides visitors a unique opportunity to sample some the finest of McNairy County's local culture while picking up those one-of-a-kind gifts to complete the holiday shopping list. The tour will be 10:00-5:00 Saturday, November 20, 2010.

The AiM Fine Craft Committee who coordinates the event will be meeting 6:00 PM Thursday, October 14 at the The Springs United Pentecostal Church in Bethel Springs. The Busy Bee Quilters are hosting the meeting and generously providing dinner. Attendees will also get the opportunity to have an advance viewing of the Bethel Springs Quilt Show which opens the following day. All AiM board and committee members, participating artisans and newcomers to the Artisan Trail are encouraged to attend. Final plans for the November 20 event will be discussed and jury selection for the fall 2010 AAT will take place at the October meeting. Past participants do not have to jury in.

The Artisan Trail is open to all McNairy County Artists and Artisans. New trail participants must be prepared to submit representative samples to the AAT jury at the meeting and all work must meet the following standards set forth by the Fine Craft Committee:

Contemporary, traditional, fine or folk art and crafts are eligible.

All arts and crafts must be deemed suitable for a general audience.

All work must exhibit a high level of artistic achievement or elements of cultural significance/ preservation.

Mass produced items such as stamped tees or caps, work produced from craft kits, etc. will be deemed unacceptable. (exceptions might include reprints from original works, castings, etc.)

Artists must agree to exhibit or demonstrate in their own studio/gallery or at another location designated by the committee during the advertised trail hours.

Photos of proposed new gallery or studio locations must be submitted for panel consideration.

Final determination for participation will rest solely with the jury panel or Fine Craft Committee.

Nunsense
October 8-12

What happens when a handful of wacky nuns stage a variety show to raise enough money to pay for the funerals of their dearly departed sisters who were accidentally killed off by a pot of sister Julia's tainted soup? The question can only be answered October 8-12 at the Selmer Community Center!

Arts in McNairy proudly presents five performances of Nunsense under the direction of Tom Cook. Cast members include Patty Cook as Mother Superior/Sister Mary Regina, Christy Carmack as Sister Mary Hubert, Melaine Murray as Sister Robert Anne, April Riley as Sister Mary Amnesia and Sarah Lemons as Sister Mary Leo. Nicole Feeney and Shelby Fox contribute supporting roles.

The show is a, laugh-a-minute, musical comedy that involves audience input and participation. Since the variety show takes place in Mount Saint Helen's school auditorium, the performing arts committed elected to use the gym and stage at the community center to lend the set an air of authenticity. It works! This is the first AiM show to be staged in a venue other than the little theatre in almost eight years.

Show times are 7:30 pm, nightly with a Sunday matinee at 2:00 pm on Sunday. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students, available at the door. Open seating will be available in the old school gymnasium. Come join the fun!

Call for Art - Traveling Art Show

The Arts in McNairy Visual Arts Committee is issuing a call for art for a traveling show to begin this fall. A number of McNairy County businesses who offer excellent display space have offered to host the exhibit to help develop local appreciation for visual arts. The traveling show is open to all artists but AiM membership is encouraged. Yearly student, individual and family memberships begin as low as $10. There are no other exhibit fees. All pieces should be suitable for general public viewing and final decisions as to appropriateness rests with the Visual Arts Committee. If an artist has an interest in selling the piece/pieces, a 3 X 5 card should be attached containing price, artist name, and contact information. Artists may also place a NFS (not for sale) tag on work. All purchase agreements will be negotiated by the individual artists and potential buyers. Ownership of piece will rest with exhibiting artist until such time as all arrangements are made.

Arts in McNairy has purchased several new easels and pedestals to be used in the traveling display and later in the gallery at the visitors and cultural center (Latta Building). More will be added as the need arises. Patrons of the arts are being offered the opportunity to sponsor an easel or pedestal (in memoriam, donated by, in honor of, etc.). The cost is $25 for each easel and $50 for each pedestal. A bronze plate will be affixed to the easel or pedestal to serve as a lasting legacy.

Nunsense Auditions
August 23 & 24

Tom Cook will return to the director's chair for the season's first production of the 2010-11 season, Nunsense. Cook directed the 2009 AiM production of Steel Magnolias which was a definite crowd favorite. Like Steel Magnolias, Nunsense features an all female cast with five principle cast members. It is a zany musical comedy by Dan Goggins that involves audience participation and a, hilarious, laugh-a-minute story line. Auditions will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, August 23 & 24 at the Selmer Community Center. Come prepared to read from the script, sing a simple musical selection of your choice and tell a couple of jokes (no kidding!) for the production team.

AiM Receives Commission Initiative Grant for Music Preservation

Stanton Littlejohn of Eastview Tennessee (Above) was an amateur fiddle player and avid tinkerer. The Littlejohn String Band played at events and gatherings in the county and according to his family, Stanton always had a penchant for new gadgets and technologies. Little did they know that these two interests would combine to preserve a unique part of McNairy County's rich musical heritage.

Starting in the mid 1940s, Littlejohn made dozens of recordings on 8 & 10 inch acetate recording discs from his Eastview, TN home. He had, some time earlier, happened upon a recording device and thought it would be interesting to hear what his friends, family and neighborhood musicians sounded like on record. Eventually, word got out that Littlejohn was making the discs and musicians from around the area found their way to his Eastview home and makeshift studio.

Though Littlejohn reportedly charged nothing for his services, he had an understanding with everyone who recorded for him. In almost every case, two recordings were made; one for the artist and one for Littlejohn's archive. Consequently, Littlejohn family members have retained a number of these early recordings in various conditions. These fragile acetate or wax recordings, as they are sometimes called, span approximately ten years and provide a revealing glimpse of McNairy County's musical interests from the period. Captured on this wonderfully diverse collection are string bands, bluegrass, folk, gospel groups, solo instrumentalists and even an early form of what would later be called rockabilly music.

In July, Arts in McNairy was notified that the organization would be the recipient of a Commission Initiative Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission for the 2010-11 fiscal year. The generous grant will allow AiM to contract the services of Middle Tennessee State University's Center for Popular Music to preserve the contents of the Littlejohn recordings. "Documenting heritage is a priority of the Folklife Program at the Tennessee Arts Commission, and we're delighted to be able to support a project dealing with such a unique resource," said Dr. Robert Cogswell, TAC Folklife Director. "I look forward to hearing what's on the records that survive from Mr. Littlejohn's life passion, and to seeing how Arts in McNairy can put these recordings to educational use."

A proposal was submitted to TAC earlier this year and Dr. Cogswell, a musician himself, strongly advocated for the preservation partnership between AiM, MTSU and TAC. "The Littlejohn recordings are a rare window into the regional music of West Tennessee in a past era," he noted. "Arts in McNairy deserves commendation for recognizing their value to local culture and taking the initiative to preserve them." The current owners of the Littlejohn recordings, Marjorie and Don Rayburn Richard, also deserve a great deal of credit for keeping the collection intact and enthusiastically cooperating with these efforts. Remastering of the records will begin later this year.

Oklahoma!
Opens July 9

Arts in McNairy’s production of Oklahoma! takes the stage this July for five great performances. All shows will be at the MCHS Little Theatre in Selmer and tickets will be available at the door for $8.00. Saturday and Sunday matinees will be performed at 2:00 on July 10 & 11 and 7:30 evening performances will take place on July 9, 10, & 12.

Oklahoma! is based on the play “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs while the music and lyrics are composed by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II. One of the most beloved pieces of musical theatre of all time, Oklahoma! boasts some of the most familiar tunes in the American popular songbook including, Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, I Cain’t Say No, People Will Say We’re in Love and of course, Oklahoma! The show is under the direction of Bryan Essary and it is being performed with an all local cast and crew. We Want You!...in AiM

Community Band

Join us at 6:30 every Thursday night in the Selmer Middle School band hall for rehearsals. Winds and percussionists of all ages and experience levels are welcomed. You must provide your own instrument but there are no fees for participation. Performance opportunities include an annual Christmas and Fall concert as well as smaller combos and groups that support the community theatre program and perform at various civic functions. No auditions are necessary, just come out and join the fun!

Auditions

May 3-4

Two nights of auditions for the upcoming Arts in McNairy production of Oklahoma will be held 6:00-8:00 PM, Monday, May 3 & Tuesday, May 4. Auditions will be in the music room at Selmer Community Center 230, North 5th Street in Selmer, TN.

A perennial Rogers and Hammerstein favorite, Oklahoma calls for a large cast with plenty of roles for men, women, children and actors of all experience levels. Be prepared to read from the script, perform a few simple dance steps in groups and sing a few bars for the music director. Lot's of extras, musicians and a large production crew will also be required so come join the fun!

Oklahoma is being directed by AiM Performing Arts Chair, Bryan Essary and production dates are July 9-12, 2010. As is the custom for AiM's summer Broadway series, five shows will be performed and the 2010-11 theatre season is expected to be announced on the opening weekend.

Steel Magnolias
April 9-11

Arts in McNairy is proud to announce three upcoming performances of Steel Magnolias 7:30 PM, April 9 & 10 and 2:00 PM April 11. All shows will be at McNairy Central High School’s Little Theatre, 493 High School Road in Selmer, TN. Tickets will be available at the door for $8.00 (adults) and $5.00 (students).

The show is based on Robert Harling’s original stage play that first appeared Off Broadway in 1987 and was later popularized by the 1989 Tri Star Pictures release. The familiar and much beloved characters are portrayed by an outstanding cast of six local ladies. Three are new to Arts in McNairy and three are veteran performers. Making return appearance to the AiM stage are Megan Woolworth (Annelle), Christy Carmack (Ouiser) and Melanie Murray (Truvy). Making their AiM debut are, Sara Morris (Shelby), Dr. Nicolle Feeney (M’Lynn) and Sara Norris (Clairee). Tom Cook returns to direct his second show with Arts in McNairy. Tom directed the memorable 2008 production of A Christmas Carol and has been seen on stage in numerous roles over the last several years.

Music & Public Art Take Center Stage in 2010 Rockabilly Revival

This week, Arts in McNairy announced the musical lineup for the 2010 Rockabilly Highway Revival. They also made available the first information about two new public art installations that will take place in conjunction with the event. The 2009 Rockabilly Highway Revival and Rockabilly Highway Mural dedication were run-away successes attracting music fans, art lovers, period car enthusiasts and just about everyone else, it seemed. Some estimated attendance as high as 5,000 for the inaugural, June, festival sponsored by Arts in McNairy, McNairy Regional Alliance, Selmer Business Alliance and the city of Selmer.

This year’s Rockabilly Revival is planned for June 12 and a schedule of events will be announced at a later date. The festival pays homage to the McNairy County’s famed Rockabilly music roots with an all day celebration including, live music, food vendors, public art dedication, period car and motorcycle shows, “Artist’s Alley,” 5K run, carnival and a multitude of other exiting attractions.

Music offerings will again include Nashville’s Rockabilly bad boy, Phil Hummer with his all female accompaniment The White Falcons. New to this year’s stage will be North Georgia’s Jason Thomas and the Mean-Eyed Cats (pictured above), who are well known to the Chattanooga music scene. The headlining act will be Carl Perkins’ and Johnny Cash’s original drummer and Sun Records recording legend, W.S. Holland with his excellent group of sidemen from Jackson, Tennessee. A few musical surprises are expected to round out the day.

Arts in McNairy will also dedicate two more pieces of public art that are part of a multiyear plan to develop a scenic walking trail in downtown Selmer. Each piece will commemorate some aspect of the county’s rich musical heritage and are funded in part by Tennessee Arts Commission grants. Metal artists Tim Pace and Bob Brooks have been commissioned to complete two very different sculptures to be placed in Selmer’s new green space and farmer’s market at the corner of Court Avenue and Front Street. This year’s Rockabilly Revival festivities are slated to open with the park and sculpture dedications.

Spring Artisan Trail - March 20

The Arts in McNairy Spring Artisan Trail will be held this Saturday, March 20, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM in the studios of McNairy County artists and artisans. The Artisan Trail is an opportunity to visit some of the finest artists in southwest Tennessee in their working environment, learn more about their creative process and purchase high quality, one-of-a-kind, art objects. The trail features, pottery, glass, beading, broom making, traditional textiles, metal sculpture, woodworking, painting and much more at various locations around McNairy County.

Community Band

Meets January 28

The first community band meeting of the year has been schedule for Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. The band will be practicing a bit and discussing plans for the upcoming year. If you have friends who play, bring them along too. Everyone who can provide their own instrument and has any level of musical skill is welcome. There are no participation fees.

The rehearsal will be at the Selmer Middle School Bandroom. Drive around the front of the building to the back parking lot (next to the city park basketball court). The door to the bandroom should be open by 6:30 p.m. Look forward to seeing everyone there!

2010 Reading List
Announced

The Arts in McNairy Literary Committee just announced the new book list and book club dates for 2010. The eclectic reading list has 11 titles (the club does not meet in December) some new and some more familiar. So, there is sure to be something to suit every interest and taste.

Book Club meets at 7:00 PM on the 3rd Thursday of each month in the conference room of the Jack McConnico Public Library in Selmer. There are no fees to join the discussion and participants are encouraged to check available titles out at county libraries or purchase their own.

Read the suggested title prior to the meeting and come prepared for a lively and informative discussion. Members and the occasional guest speaker moderate the discussion and light refreshments are usually served. Come out and enjoy book club. You'll be glad you did!

Thanks to everyone who auditioned for the upcoming show. Mother Goose and Friends, as many of you know was a working title. The play has been narrowed down to two great, one act, sketches; The Emperor's New Clothes and The Reluctant Knight, both of which deal very differently with "royal clothing." The show will therefore be titled, Tale of Two Tailors.

The Arts in McNairy Music Committee is proud to present the annual holiday concert entitled, "The Sounds of Christmas." This year's concert is being held at Selmer First Baptist Church and features the AiM Holiday Choir, the AiM Community Band, the Selmer Elementary Children's Bell Choir with special guests, Chelsea Rhodes and vocal group 4-Joy. Directors will be Guy Grimstead, Gene Hebert, Bryan Essary, Pam Stackhouse and Ronnie Brooks. The concert is scheduled for Thursday, December 3rd at 6:30 PM. The Selmer Christmas Parade is scheduled for 7:30 the same evening so holiday revelers can take advantage of both events. Come out and get yourself in the holiday spirit with the great annual event!

White Christmas
Nov. 20-24

Arts in McNairy is proud to announce five upcoming performance of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, November 20-24, 2009 at the MCHS Little Theatre. All show times are 7:30 PM nightly with the exception of the Sunday performance which will be a 2:00 PM matinee. Tickets are available at the door for $8.00 (Adults) and $5.00 (Students). The show is based on the beloved Paramount film starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney and the book by David Ives and Paul Blake. The screenplay was written by Norman Krasna, Norman Panama and Melvin Franks. It features seventeen original Irving Berlin tunes including the holiday favorite and title track, White Christmas. Other recognizable selections include: Happy Holiday/Let Yourself Go, Blue Skies, Sisters, Let Me Sing and I’m Happy, I Love a Piano and I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.

White Christmas in under the direction of AiM Performing Arts Chair, Bryan Essary. Musical Director is Sarah Lemons and the show is choreographed by Jennifer Threadgil. It is a wonderful, heartwarming show with a great cast and it will be enjoyed by the whole family. What a great way to kick off the holiday season! Don't miss it!

Photo Show Winners

The 5th Annual Arts in McNairy Photography Contest
and Show, once again, drew great interest and more than 200 stunning, amateur photos from around the region. A well attended reception, awards ceremony and exhibit opening took place Sunday Oct. 18 at the UTM center in Selmer. "The show just keeps getting better every year," commented contest coordinator Mark Boehler. "I would put it up against any amateur show, anywhere, as far as the quality of the artistry is concerned," he added.

Community Band Goes Online

The Arts in McNairy Community Band now has it's own website! The new site just went live this week thanks to band member John Weeks who has designed and customized the content to reflect the needs of the growing organization. Band members can check updated rehearsal schedules and visitors will find information about upcoming performances. There are also photos from past events and information about requirements for joining the band. White Christmas Cast and Crew Announced!

Congratulations to everyone for two great days of auditions. We are proud to be among the first arts organizations in the country to present White Christmas! This is a great cast and crew and it will be a great show. We are also proud to have the McNairy Central Jazz Cats joining us for some ensemble parts and even a few smaller roles. Though we have always had a great working relationship with area schools, this marks the first time we have attempted a collaboration of this scale with two performing arts groups coming together for one show. Much thanks to Sarah Lemons for being the unifying force in this effort and for everything else she does to improve the arts in our community. Director Bryan Essary will be in contact soon with rehearsal schedules.

White Christmas Auditions

Based on the book by David Ives and Paul Blake, White Christmas is best remembered as the beloved, timeless film, staring Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye. The heartwarming musical theatre adaptation features seventeen Irving Berlin songs including Blue Skies, I Love a Piano, How Deep is the Ocean and the perennial favorite, White Christmas. Arts in McNairy is proud to be one of the first arts organizations in the area to present Irving Berlin's White Christmas November 20-24, 2009 at the MCHS Little Theatre.

The show is under the direction of Bryan Essary and Auditions are being held 6:00-8:00 PM, September 28 & 29 at the Selmer Community Center. White Christmas will support a large cast with strong male and female principal roles and several other feature parts. Actors should be 12 or older to audition and come prepared to read and demonstrate basic singing and dance skills. Choreography will be by Jennifer Threadgil and musical direction will be provided by Sarah Lemons.

2009 Broomcorn Festival Canceled

What can you do about the weather? We are sorry to report that Hockaday Handmade Brooms has been forced to cancel the 2009 Broomcorn Festival. Jack Martin and Parks and Rec. Director, Sybil Dancer inspected the park this morning and there has been extensive flooding that will make it impossible for vendors and visitors to get in and out of the low lying areas around the track. There is no rain date due to the busy fall schedule that Jack and the rest of the artists maintain, but Martin pledges that next year's landmark 15th annual Broomcorn festival will be bigger and better than ever. Make plans to attend!

Broomcorn Festival

Now in it's 14th year, the Hockaday Broomcorn Festival just keeps getting bigger and better. What started as a fall harvest event on Jack and Dee Martin's farm has grown into one of the South's premier folk art festivals. The popular festival is now held annually in the City Park at the south intersection of Highway 45 and Highway 64 in Selmer. This year's festivities begin at 9:00 AM and conclude at 5:00 PM on Saturday, September 19. Admission is $3.00 for all adults but as an added incentive, this year, children through 8th grade will get in free. Organizers hope the change will attract more area young people and interest them in exploring their unique cultural heritage.

Jack Martin's dedication to preservation of traditional, American, folk art and craft can be seen in every detail of his

brooms but no where is that passion more evident than at the annual Broomcorn Festival. More than thirty, first rate, folk and craft artists will be on hand demonstrating traditional techniques in textiles, pottery, glass, woodworking, basketry, blacksmithing and, of course, broom making to name just a few things. The whole family will find plenty of other activites to hold their interest throughout the day with wagon rides, face painting, numerous food vendors and live music from beginning to end. Legendary, Beale Street, Blues guitarist, Don McMinn will headline this year's music.

Rockabilly Highway Homecoming

McNairy County Mayor, Jai Templeton; Bethel Springs Mayor, Norma Smith and Selmer Mayor David Robinson, have signed an official proclamation naming next week "Rockabilly Highway Homecoming" throughout the county. September 17 marks the 55th anniversary of the famed meeting between Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins at a Presley performance in Bethel Springs, TN. Many county residents fondly recall the event but admit that they were unaware they were witnessing music history at the time. Perkins' would later note in his memoirs and various interviews that meeting Presley at Bethel Springs was a turning point in his career and it was listed as an historic American cultural event in Jay Warner's 2004 book, On This Day in Music History.

It is hoped that the proclamation will further awareness about the significance of this historic date as well as other facets of McNairy County's rich musical heritage. Significant attention has already been focused on McNairy County's Rockabilly roots with the 2008 designation of Highway 45 as Rockabilly Highway and the 2009 addition of the Rockabilly Highway Mural and Revival in downtown Selmer. Bethel Springs is said to be considering several other ideas that would preserve the memory of this historic occasion.

The official Rockabilly Highway Homecoming proclamation reads:

Whereas, American cultural icons Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins met for the first time in Bethel Springs, McNairy County, Tennessee on September 17, 1954; and Whereas, this meeting is universally acknowledged as a significant event in the history of American music; and Whereas, Tennessee House Bill #2489 and Senate Bill #2546 have designated state highway forty five throughout it's length in McNairy County, "Rockabilly Highway" in an effort to call attention to the musical heritage of Southwest Tennessee; and Whereas, Bethel Springs, Selmer and other McNairy County communities played an important role in the development of Rockabilly Music and are geographically situated on Rockabilly Highway, and Whereas, the people of Bethel Springs, Selmer and McNairy County Tennessee value their rich musical heritage and desire to preserve and promote it in meaningful ways; and Whereas, Thursday, September 17, 2009 marks the fifty fifth anniversary of the aforementioned Presley and Perkins meeting; Now Therefore We, McNairy County Mayor, Jai Templeton; Bethel Springs Mayor, Norma Smith and Selmer Mayor, David Robinson do hereby proclaim the week of September 17, from this day forward as Rockabilly Highway Homecoming in Bethel Springs, Selmer and McNairy County Tennessee and call upon the people thereof to observe this date with all appropriate programs, activities and ceremonies. Annual Photo Contest
Now Accepting Entries

The annual Arts in McNairy Amateur Photo Contest is now accepting entries to bring exposure to the art of photography and showcase McNairy County. The contest, which routinely draws hundreds of entries from around the state and region, is open to amateurs of all ages. Only the judging panel and their families are barred from participation.

The cost is $10 for the first entry; $10 for the second entry; $10 for the third entry and thereafter $5 per entry. All entries fees must be check or money order made payable to Arts in McNairy. Deadline for entry is 4:00 PM October 16 at the UTM Campus in Selmer just off of Highway 45 North. Mail-in entries must be postmarked by
October 12 and addressed to:

In each category $50 will be awarded for 1st place; $25 will be awarded for second prize and ribbons will be awarded to 3rd place and honorable mention. AiM Community Band Announces Organizational Meeting September 14

The first Community Band meeting of the fall season has been scheduled for Monday, September 14, 6:30 at Selmer Middle School band hall. Director Ronnie Brooks will provide information about upcoming opportunities to participate in community music programs including the holiday band and chorus concert and Big Band style orchestra for the AiM production of White Christmas. This years Christmas concert in tentatively scheduled for Thursday December 10, 2009 at First Baptist of Selmer. White Christmas will be November 20-24 at McNairy Central High School Little Theatre.

These community music programs are open to the public and no audition is required for participation. The band welcomes musicians of all age and skill levels and it is not unusual to see student band members playing alongside retirees who have picked up their instruments for the first time in years. There are no fees for participation but members are required to provide and maintain their own instruments. Rehearsals are typically on alternating Monday nights throughout the season. Schedules and more information will be available at the September 14 meeting.

If you've been considering dusting off that old instrument or looking for a new opportunity to improve your current musical skills, Community Band is a great place to start. It provides an excellent opportunity to meet, practice and perform with other musicians in a very relaxed, fun and informal environment. Just when you thought the theatre season was over, Arts in McNairy presents, The Dames of Broadway! The show is a musical revue of the greatest Broadway hits from the most memorable ladies of the stage. From the tantalizing Dream Girls theme to the beautiful "Some things are Meant to Be" from Little Women; the unforgettable "Sisters" made popular in Irving Berlin's White Christmas to the energetic "Dancin' Queen" in Mama Mia; "For Good" from Wicked; "I Got the Sun in the Morning" from Annie Get Your Gun; and the list goes on and on! All of Broadway's best! All your favorites! Sung by some of the most gifted ladies of the Arts in McNairy stage with a few special guest appearances, the show is being directed by Ben Wilkinson and Choreographed by Jennifer Threadgill.

Saturday night audiences at "Dames" will have the added pleasure of sampling the outrageously decadent, dessert bar. Several mouthwatering treats prepared by Sonya Ruby will be available during intermission for an additional fee.

Starmites Are Coming

This Weekend!

The 2008-09 Arts in McNairy theatre season will conclude with three performances of the Broadway musical Starmites June 19-21. Friday (6/19) and Saturday (6/20) evening performances are scheduled for 7:30 PM and a Sunday (6/21) matinee is scheduled for 2:00 PM. All performances will be at the McNairy Central High School Little Theatre and tickets will be available at the door for $5.00 (student) and $8.00 (adult).

Starmites was nominated for six Tony Awards when it first debuted on Broadway in 1989 and has since become a favorite of community theatre and performing arts groups. The show has an all local cast of about 30 young performers. It is part musical sci-fi adventure, part love story, part superhero drama and all fun. It tells the story of the shy teenager Eleanor who withdraws into the fantasy world of her science fiction comic books only to be drawn into an epic battle with the fate of the earth hanging in the balance. Is it real or all in Eleanor's imagination? You will have to stay till the climactic, “mind bending” conclusion to discover the answer.

Starmites is adapted from a book by Stuart Ross and Barry Keating and is being produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. New York, NY. Music and lyrics are by Barry Keating with vocal arrangements by Dianne Adams. Special thanks to Selmer artist Molly Weatherford for visual adaptations of Starmites. Local performances are under the direction of Jared A. Walters and the show is appropriate for all ages. Don’t miss it!

The Rockabilly Highway Revival is Coming - Schedule Announced!

The paint is almost dry, the last few touches are being added and the party is about to begin! Nashville Artist Brian Tull’s spectacular Rockabilly Highway Mural will be unveiled and dedicated Saturday, June 13, 2009 as the Rockabilly Revival comes to downtown Selmer, TN. Festivities begin at 8:00 AM with a 5K Rockabilly Run and continue throughout the day with mural dedication ceremonies, live Rockabilly music, period car cruise-in, food vendors, carnival, arts and antique shopping and much, much, more. A complete schedule is listed below.

Nashville Rockabilly bands, Jakehead and Phil Hummer and the White Falcons are scheduled to perform afternoon sets and as a special treat, the music will conclude with a performance by legendary Sun Records artists, W.S. “Fluke” Holland and Carl Mann. Holland was the drummer for all of Carl Perkins’ Sun Records releases including Blue Suede Shoes; played on the Million Dollar Quartet session and toured and recorded with Johnny Cash for more than thirty years. Carl Mann recorded the chart topping Rockabilly hit, “Mona Lisa,” for Sun in 1959. Both men are native West Tennesseans.

From Mural to Revival

What started as a public art project has become a full fledged revival in McNairy County Tennessee. What exactly is being revived? Interest in the county's musical heritage for one thing; community enthusiasm for the whole Rockabilly Highway project for another.

As Brian Tull put the first vibrant brush strokes of red and yellow on the wall at the corner of Court and 2nd Avenue, in downtown Selmer, the buzz started. As the eye-catching images began to pop off of the plain white wall it sparked the imagination of the entire community. People everywhere were talking about what was going on in Selmer. A steady stream of traffic filed by to sneak a peak. They haven't been disappointed!

As the three primary partners in the mural project, Arts in McNairy, The McNairy County Chamber of Commerce and the Selmer Business Alliance began to make plans for the mural's dedication ceremonies a number of ideas for a bigger and better event soon emerged. A 5K Rockabilly Run, an antique car cruise-in, food vendors, a carnival and live music are all in the works. Nashville Rockabilly artists Jakehead and Phil Hummer and the White Falcons as well as legendary Sun recording artists, W.S. Holland and Carl Mann are all scheduled to perform. That's how you go from a mural to a revival!

Harris was at Downtown Books with his first book, Walking Wounded, in 2006. About this second collection of prizewinning short stories, Mark Powell (Prodigals, Blood Kin) said: “Jimmy Carl writes with a stunning tenderness about those life has deemed out of bounds: old soldiers who have lost fingers but not hope; old women alone and misunderstood, living off memories and cigarettes. Wounds That Bind is a fierce, gut-wrenching collection, but always beneath the hard edges one senses deep love and understanding for the men and women life has not always treated gently." Harris lives to write in Birmingham but is regularly featured at book events in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and elsewhere. His books were published by Iris Press and are widely available.

A retired US Marine Corps Sergeant Major, Harris received his doctorate from the University of Alabama and taught at Southeastern Louisiana University. Currently, he teaches writing workshops throughout the Southeast. He says, “There are good stories. There are safe stories. There are no good safe stories. I try to live up to that credo in my writing and I encourage my students to do the same.”

Starmites Auditions
April 27 & 28

Director Jared Walters has announced audition and production dates for the final show of the Arts in McNairy theatre season. It is an AiM tradition to conclude each season with a Musical and this year will be no exception. Three performances of Starmites are scheduled for June 19-21 at MCHS Little Theatre.

Starmites first debuted on Broadway in April 1989 earning six Tony Award nominations including the coveted nod for Best Musical. It is a musical comedy with a mostly youth and young adult cast that takes the audience on a campy romp across the universe and back incorporating a variety of musical styles along the way. It tells the story of the shy teenager Eleanor who withdraws into the fantasy world of her science fiction comic books only to be drawn into an epic battle with the fate of the earth hanging in the balance. Is it real or all in Eleanor's imagination? You will have to stay till the climactic, mind bending conclusion to discover the answer.

The production calls for a large group including cast members, backstage crew and musicians. Auditions are being held 6:00 PM, Monday April 27 & Tuesday April 28 at the Selmer Community Center. Those auditioning for roles in the cast should be prepared to read, sing and practice basic dance steps in a group setting. Call backs will be on May 1 or 2. The Starmite Youth Orchestra consists of piano, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and drums. Musical auditions will be held April 28 at 6:00 PM at the Selmer Middle School Band Hall. Musicians should bring their own instruments (except for piano and drums) and be prepared to review the musical score and informally play some of the charts with the music director.

Everyone is encouraged to attend auditions regardless of theatre experience. Come out and join the fun with Starmites!

State Representative Dennis

Honors Heritage and Culture

State Representative Vance Dennis was, quite literally, sweeping through McNairy County last week. County officials and Arts in McNairy board members presented a handmade broom to the district 71 representative at a Thursday gathering in Selmer. The broom will be displayed at his Nashville office.

Why a broom? Mr. Dennis has expressed a desire to do something more than just decorate his new office in the usual fashion. “Lots of people from across the state and country come to my office at the Capitol throughout the year,” he said, “and I intend to use this aspect of my position to promote the benefits of our community to the greatest extent possible."

In talking with county Mayor , Jai Templeton, the Representative mentioned that he was aware of McNairy County ’s recent focus on our region’s rich heritage and culture. The mayor in turn contacted Arts in McNairy members who are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of folk art and heritage craft traditions in Southwest Tennessee . Something from Hockaday Handmade Brooms seemed like the perfect fit since owner, Jack Martin, is a fourth generation McNairy County broom maker and local organizer of the annual Broomcorn Festival. He has been featured in national magazines, made numerous television appearances and even has a broom in the Smithsonian.

On receiving the broom the representative noted, "I am honored to have the opportunity to display part of the cultural heritage of our community in our State Capitol. I look forward to displaying many examples of the significant cultural, historical, commercial, and industrial aspects of our community that make this area a wonderful place to live, work, and visit.” Mr. Dennis’ wife Ashley noted the broom was a particularly appropriate choice since her great grandfather, like Mr. Martin’s, was a broom maker by trade.

The Dennis’ also said they plan to continue adding to the Representatives collection of handmade, McNairy County, items by attending the AiM Artisan Trail Spring Tour on March 21. The event features some of Southwest Tennessee ’s finest working artisans opening their studios between 10:00-5:00 for tours and demonstrations. Updated maps will be available on this blog by Saturday March 14.

Anne of Green Gables
March 13-15

A cast of more than 30 local young people will bring Anne of Green Gables to the stage for three public performances, March 13 through March 15 at McNairy Central High School's Little Theatre. Friday and Saturday show times are scheduled for 7:30 PM and a Sunday matinee will be presented at 2:00 PM. Two morning shows are also being performed exclusively for McNairy County school children. Those interested in bringing groups to these performances should contact Joanna Pitts at 731-645-3850 for reservations and more details.

The show is a dramatic adaptation of the classic children's novel that is, coincidentally, being celebrated for it's 100th year of publication in 2009. It tells the story of the plucky, Anne Shirley who is mistakenly sent by an orphanage to live at Green Gables with the Cuthbert family to fill the role of farmhand. The family's initial shock gives way to the development of warm relationships with the irrepressible Anne but not without many adventure and misadventures along the way.

New Art Festival

Coming This Spring

The latest addition to the McNairy County cultural calendar is the Lawton Spring Art Festival. Artists from all over West Tennessee, including many McNairy County favorites, will converge on the Lawton Community Center to welcome spring and share the creative process; both in full bloom! The event is scheduled from 10:00-3:00 on Saturday April 18, 2009.*

High quality painting, pottery, glass, wood carving, metal sculpture and much more will be on display for everyone to purchase and enjoy. Many of the artisans will be on hand to discuss and demonstrate their unique techniques in a fun and friendly atmosphere. The festival will be an educational, fun filled, day for the whole family.

The Lawton community center is located just east of Selmer on Crabtree Road. Exit from Hwy 64 East or Lawton Road and follow the signs. The event is being sponsored by the Lawton Neighborhood Club and lunch will be available on the grounds. All proceeds support future festivals and the Neighborhood Club.

The Bible Salesman - February 19th

Clyde Edgerton's new novel, The Bible Salesman will be the subject of discussion at the February book club meeting, 7:00 PM, Thursday February 19. The AiM book club meets every third Thursday in the McNairy Regional Hospital public conference room, just off the hospital's main entrance by the cafeteria. The hospital is located on Hwy 64 in Selmer near the south intersection of Hwy 45.

Community Band Meeting - Feb. 9th

After a short respite following the December Christmas concert, the Arts in McNairy community band is organizing for the 2009 season. The years first meeting and rehearsal will be held 7:00 PM, Monday February 9 at Selmer Middle School band hall. The school is located at the south intersection of Hwys 45 and 64 in Selmer. Enter the band hall directly at the rear of the building adjacent to the city park swimming pool. Director, Ronnie Brooks will announce rehearsal schedules, provide music and have information about upcoming events.

Community band is open to musicians of all skill levels. No auditions are required. You must provide your own instrument and be able to read basic music. This eclectic group includes everyone from retirees to music students. The goal is to provide an outlet for the community to participate in organized music programs in a fun and supportive environment. Come join the fun!

As always, we were unable to cast some great actors due to the limited availability of roles. This inevitably happens with every show and the director and production team agonizes over the decisions each time. If you were not casted for Anne, please try again next time. It is always a joy to see so much community interest in Arts in McNairy's dramatic productions.

The cast is listed below. There will be a mandatory cast and crew meeting 6:00 PM, Monday February 2 at the Eastside Church of Christ gym. Jan. 26 & 27

Open auditions for AiM's production of Anne of Green Gables are set for 6:00-8:00 PM, Monday January 26 and Tuesday January 27 at the Selmer Civic Center, 232 North 5th Street in Selmer. Many children's roles are available for all age and experience levels. A few (0ptional) adult roles may also be available. Principle characters include, Anne (multiple cast members from ages 8-18), Marilla & Matthew Cuthbert, Moody, Josie and Dianna. Production dates, rehearsal schedules and further information will be available at auditions.

2009 marks the 100th anniversary of this beloved piece of children's literature and AiM is pleased to commemorate the occasion with this dramatic adaptation. When the Cuthbert's of Green Gables agree to adopt a boy to help with the farm work they are in for a surprise. Imagine their consternation when Anne Shirley, a girl in her teens, is sent by the orphanage by mistake! Anne touches Matthew Cuthbert's heart with her vivid imagination and charitable viewpoint, but it takes time to reach the tender heart beneath Marilla's hard exterior. Then there is young Josie Pye, a lad named Moody Spurgeon and Dianna, Anne's "bosom buddy."

This lovely classic is simple to present and full of warmth and wit. Everyone is invited to audition regardless of theatre experience.

Holiday Concert
December 4th

If getting in the holiday spirit is a challenge for you, Arts in McNairy has the answer! The AiM Holiday Singers and Community Band Concert is sure to do the trick. This annual event is one of the highlights of the holiday season for many local residents not to mention the community band and chorus participants.

The holiday concert in being held 7:00 PM, December 4th at Lakeview Baptist Church in Selmer. The Holiday Singers, children's bell choir, community band and several soloists and ensembles are scheduled to perform. Admission is free and as Music Committee Chair Pam Stackhouse says, "The concert is AiM's Christmas gift to the community."

Constance Beck (Connie to her friends) operates one of the most unique businesses in McNairy County. Appalachian Threads in downtown Adamsville is part spinning and weaving studio, part art gallery, part teaching facility, and all fun.

Connie masterfully spins and weaves natural fibers into wearable works of art. She raises her own angora rabbits and goats and purchases alpaca and llama fleece from local farmers. Her hats, shawls, scarves and throws are both beautiful and functional, not to mention one of a kind originals. Her products are available in her shop at 134 E. Ms. Beck is a member of Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (TACA) and has exhibited at their annual show in Nashville. She was recently elected president of the West Tennessee Chapter of that organization. Connie is also a regular at Dollywood in East Tennessee, where she uses her skill to demonstrate traditional craft techniques for appreciative audiences.

Maiden Tennessee Gallery, also located at Connie's Adamsville shop, showcases more than 20 other local artists and artisans including beautiful stoneware from 2B Pottery, whimsical metal sculpture from Eco-Art by Tim Pace, fine hand-sewn garments by Sarah Norris as well as many other handmade items from around the region. It is a great place to shop for unique gifts on all occasions.

As if this were not enough, Appalachian Threads also sells high quality spinning and weaving equipment. Connie offers regular classes where she shares more than 20 years of experience with beginning and intermediate textile artists. Call or inquire at the studio about scheduling a lesson.

First Book

Club Meeting

November 20

The restructured Literary Arts Committee will host the first meeting to organize a new book club Thursday, November 20, at 7:00 PM in McNairy Regional Hospital's conference room. The club will meet regularly on the third Thursday of each month. You do not have to be an AiM member to participate. Everyone is invited and there are no fees for participation beyond book purchase and these may be bulk ordered at group rates.

The first two book club selections and the moderator will be announced at the November meeting. The group then plans to take a holiday break and meet again in January for the first discussion. More information about a possible poetry reading and the spring 2009 creative writing contest will also be available at the meetings. All readers, writers and literary buffs mark your calendars now and make plans to attend!

A Christmas

Carol Opens

November 21

The second offering of the Arts in McNairy theatre season will be Charles Dickens’ immortal classic, A Christmas Carol. Three public performances are scheduled for November 21 & 22 at 7:30 PM and November 23 at 2:00 PM. All shows will be at the McNairy Central High School Little Theatre, 493 High School Road in Selmer. Tickets will be available at the door for $8.00 (adults) and $5.00 (students).

The perennial holiday favorite was adapted for the stage by director Tom Cook, who remains faithful to the much beloved 19th Century novel. This delightful retelling features the familiar cast of characters, Scrooge, Marley, Tiny Tim and a host of colorful Christmas spirits all portrayed by local performers. The show is appropriate for all ages and will serve as a great kickoff for the holiday season. Don’t miss the show!

November 15th

One of the most anticipated events on the Arts in McNairy calendar just got a lot better! The fall Artisan Trail tour is expanding to include several new artisan stops and the Adamsville rural heritage festival. It will be a great time to pick up unique, one of a kind, Christmas gifts, learn about the folk and fine art traditions of McNairy County and meet some of the best artists and artisans in Southwest Tennessee.

The biannual AiM Artisan Trail tour is an open invitation to visit with the artists and artisans in their shops and studios. Participants can watch the artists plying their trade, learn about their artistic process first hand and purchase their work. First time visitors will enjoy meeting the artists and seeing them in action while those who have participated in the past will find plenty of new things to excite their curiosity.

Participating artisans will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 15th. Visitors may start at any of the studios listed below and call on as many artists as their time and interests will allow. Updated maps will be available at all locations on the tour and there are no admission fees. Online maps will also be available for download on this blog, one week prior to the event.

Sandy Carroll Gets Brass Note on Beale

Though she is one of the best known and loved, Beale Street, artists of her generation, Sandy Carroll is a McNairy County original. Heavily influenced by the potent combination of Blues, Gospel and Rockabilly Music of her native Southwest Tennessee, Sandy found her musical voice at an early age. After several years of performing around the country, Beale Street beckoned and Sandy landed at Lafayette's Corner on Beale in 1983. She was the headliner there for more than a year and became a regular at several other Beale Street hot spots. By 1984 she had released her first album. The rest, as they say, is history.

Sandy has recorded four solo CD's and a number of compilation projects including the 2002 release, "Memphis Belles - Past, Present and Future" featuring, Ruby Wilson, Carla Thomas and Cybill Shepard among other legendary female artists. Her skills as a writer have also been in great demand and Sandy's songs been recorded by literally dozens of other musicians and singers including such Blues luminaries as Albert King, Luther Allison and Don McMinn.

Performing at concerts, festivals and clubs across the U.S. and abroad while maintaining a busy Beale Street schedule, Sandy has performed with Rufus Thomas, The Memphis Horns and countless others over the years. She is featured in the 2001 syndicated PBS concert special, "In Their Own Voices," which pays tribute to Memphis' incredible songwriting tradition.

Sandy and her Grammy Award winning husband, Jim Gaines now live in the Pickwick area and they have converted the Carroll family home at Stantonville into a recording studio. In 2006 Sandy returned to McNairy County for a homecoming concert during the AiM Summer Concert Series much to the delight of her local friends and family. She continues to work around the region and nationally at selected events and appearances. You can keep up with her busy schedule by checking her website and blog with the links listed below.

Arts in McNairy is proud to be among the first to announce that Sandy is being awarded one of Memphis music's highest honors, the Brass Note on Beale, Friday, October 24 at 5:30 PM. The presentation ceremony at W.C. Handy Park, will kick off a weekend of music celebrating the 25th anniversary of the revitalization of Beale Street and the revival of the Memphis Blues tradition. Other inductees include Don McMinn, Preston Shannon and Kevin Paige. All artists will perform following their induction with a 9:30 Jam Session capping a spectacular evening of Blues.

Photo Contest Reception & Exhibit October 12th

Arts in McNairy's annual photography contest and exhibit has quickly become one of the mainstays of the Visual Arts Committee's yearly activities. Now in it's fifth season, the contest continues to grow and improve each year under the direction of contest chairman Mark Boehler and VA Chair George Souders. This year's contest, again, attracted almost 300 entries form amateur photographers around the midsouth. "We are very happy with the contest and the interest shown by area photographers," said Boehler. "We have some really quality art work and people will enjoy coming to see the photos," he continued, referring to the opening reception being held this weekend. Souders added that the number of participating photographers was up this year due, in part, to the handsome purse being offered for the winning photographs and the strong possibility of selling the photographs at the reception and show. The awards reception and exhibit opening will be held Sunday, Oct. 12 from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at the UTM McNairy Center, 1269 Tennessee, Ave. in Selmer. The catered reception is free to the public and everyone is invited to attend and enjoy the photos and a chance to meet the artists. The exhibit will be on display daily at UTM McNairy from 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. through November 14th for those who happen to miss the reception. The 2008 AiM Photography Contest Results

Calling All Artists!

The fall Arts in McNairy (AiM) Artisan Trail will be held Saturday, November 15, 2008 and AiM is looking for Artists and Artisans to participate. If you live in McNairy or surrounding counties and would like to be involved, we want to hear from you. An informational meeting and jury selection session are being held 6:00 PM, October 2 at the UTM McNairy Center, just off highway 45 North in Selmer. Everyone is invited to attend.

Anyone interested in being on the AiM fall tour should come prepared to show representative samples of your work. High quality, detailed photos are also acceptable where portability is an issue, but samples will be required in most cases. Those seeking to have their studio or gallery added to the trail map should also supply inside and outside photos of the physical location. All participants must meet jury selection criteria and exhibit a high level of artistic and/or cultural significance. No mass produced items will be considered.

The AiM Artisan Trail shines the spotlight on the heritage and culture of McNairy County twice yearly with a spring and fall tour featuring working artist studios, and points of cultural interest. The Musical" Opens

October 4th & 5th

The Arts in McNairy theatre season opens October 4th & 5th with two Saturday performances (2:00 PM and 7:30 PM) and a Sunday matinee (2:00 PM) of "Circuit Riders Wife - The Musical." All shows will be performed at McNairy Central High School's Little Theatre, 493 High School Road in Selmer. All tickets are $8.00 and will be available only at the door.

Arts in McNairy is proud to be among the first Tennessee theatre groups to perform the musical which is based on the novel by Corra Harris. It was adapted for the stage by Tennessee playwright, Doris Dennison Burns and includes 14 original songs by her husband Dr. Jim Burns who is a music professor at Lee University. As a rare treat, audience members will be able to meet the Burns', who plan to be at the closing performance. A reception in their honor is being held following the Sunday performance and everyone is invited to attend.

The show is a, surprisingly contemporary, musical comedy set against the backdrop of the "Redwine Circuit," in early 1900's rural Appalachia. It has garnered several honors and delighted audiences throughout the south since it's debut in October 2002. "We've had more fun putting this show together than anything we've ever done for AiM," said director Bryan Essary, "We can't wait to share it with audiences!"

Annual Photography Contest Now Accepting Entries

Arts in McNairy begins accepting entries, this month, for the popular annual photography contest. The competition that routinely draws hundreds of entries from around the area is open to amateurs of all ages. Prizes are being awarded in several categories including: natural landscape; architecture; people; pets, animals and wildlife; black and white; digital/computer enhanced and McNairy County subjects. All entries must be matted or dry mounted in 8x10 or 5x7 format. No framed entries will be accepted. No previously published photos or past winners in the AiM photo contest are eligible for entry. Both digital and traditional film images are welcome. Submission deadline is 4:00 p.m. Friday October 3, 2008 at the UTM Center in Selmer. Arts in McNairy is proud to present Homemade Jamz Blues Band live in concert Saturday August 23, 2008 at the beautiful Edward Simpson Performance Stage (The Ed) in the Selmer City Park. The park and stage are located at the south intersection of Highways 45 and 64 just behind the gazebo. In the event of rain, the Selmer Community Center will act as a back up venue. The concert which begins at 8:00 PM is the last of the summer for the AiM concert season. Admission is free but donations to Arts in McNairy are always appreciated.

Though they may be the youngest Blues players you’ve ever seen, Ryan (16), Kyle (13) and Taya (9) Perry of the Tupelo, MS based Homemade Jamz are certainly no novelty act. They have played high profile Blues festivals and clubs internationally, been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, National Public Radio, in numerous national magazines and are something of a sensation on internet video sites such as YouTube. As if that wasn’t enough to establish their reputation they won the Delta Blues Society’s Blues Challenge in 2006 and placed 2nd in the 23rd International Blues Challenge in 2007 as the youngest band ever to be accepted into the that prestigious competition.

So what’s all the fuss? Referring to a Homemade Jamz performance, the immortal Blues legend B.B. King said, “In my 82 years, I’ve never seen something musically, so remarkable.” How’s that for an endorsement? Simply stated, Homemade Jamz is one of the finest Blues bands, of any age, working today, enthralling live audiences from coast to coast with a potent high energy electric Blues sound infused with the soul of the Mississippi Delta. Critics have herald the young Tupelo trio as the torch bearers for the next generation of Blues artists. Don’t miss Homemade Jamz in a rare West Tennessee appearance.

Circuit Riders Wife

Circuit Riders Wife is a hilarious musical comedy based on the book "The Circuit Rider's Wife" by Corra Harris and adapted for the stage by Tennessee playwright, Doris Dennison Burns and lyricist and composer, Dr. Jim W. Burns. The plot follows the career of an early circuit riding preacher, his wife and the cast of comedic characters to which they are called to minister. The delightful musical score is evocative of the era and very effectively rendered with instrumentation consistent with that period. Arts in McNairy will be among the first Tennessee arts organizations to present performances of the Circuit Riders Wife and we are proud to support Tennessee artists in this meaningful way! The show will be great fun to perform and certainly enjoyable for audience members of all ages.

Audition Requirements: Be prepared to read a selection from the show of the directors choice; (You will not be reading with another person unless called back.) Call Backs & Rehearsals: Call backs (if needed) will be held on Thursday night, August 14. You will be contacted by phone if you are needed for callbacks. If you are not called back, it does not mean you are not in the cast. The cast list will be posted on this blog Saturday August 16 and rehearsals are slated to begin Monday August 18

Cast of Characters:

Mary, (age 15-30) A sophisticated lady who learned many interesting, sometimes harsh lessons, but who comes to call the Redwine Circuit, “The Homeplace of my heart.”

William, (age 18 – 30) A country preacher who falls for a city girl of a different religious background that proves to be challenging when he takes her to the Redwine Circuit to live.

Davy Dyer, (25 and up) the blacksmith and county’s only infidel who attends the Redwine church for the music, but finds it necessary to keep his brown jug near by.

Sister Meadows, (35 and up) the watchdog of the Redwine community, who is certain of God’s orders and with “pharisaical doggedness, proceeds to carry them out...”

Jimmy Meadows,(18 –25) Sister Meadows’ caring, independent son who falls in love with Paisley, an outcast of the community.

Paisley Conner, (18 – 25) who in the past “had a baby born in sin” that died shortly after coming into it’s poor, fatherless, unforgiving world. Paisley’s goodness and repentance brought her little favor with the Redwine folks.

Glory White, (30 and up) level-headed, loving, tolerant, “Not perfect mind you, but a fine, ‘normal’ Christian,” she tells Mary, “Whatever that means!”

Sam White, (30 and up) Glory’s husband, a pillar of the church with the most sensitive conscience; “afraid of what he might do to shake loose the foundation he had built and like most of us, afraid to live and afraid to die.”

Rolls for townspeople and children are available. Will be based upon auditions.

The Selmer Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a day long Independence Day celebration at the Selmer City Park. Part of the festivities will feature two of Arts in McNairy's musical groups. A children's choir will perform a series of patriotic songs under the direction of committee chair, Pam Stackhouse and the community band will play a salute to the armed forces under the direction of Ronnie Brooks. Both groups are part of Arts in McNairy's efforts to increase community participation in organized music programs.

The Sound of
Music Opens
June 13 !!!!!!

The hills are alive with the sound of music...the hills of Tennessee that is! Arts in McNairy brings the 2007-2008 theatre season to a grand finale with four performances of the most beloved musical of all time, Rogers and Hammerstein’s, The Sound of Music. Show times are 7:30 PM Friday June 13 and Saturday June 14. Two matinee performances are scheduled at 2:00 PM, Saturday June 14 and Sunday June 15. Tickets will only be available at the door for $8.00 each. All performances will be at the McNairy Central High School Little Theatre 493 High School Road in Selmer, TN.

The cast includes a great mix of local and regional talent with Jennifer Chambers and Dr. Richard Strachan taking on the lead roles as Maria and Captain Von Trapp. Catherine Bailey, Dillon Rorie, Emily Pitts, Sarah Rininger, Jordan Rickman, Ana Grace Ashe and Sarah Catherine O’Connell are cast as the Von Trapp Children while Patty Cook and Thomas Elam portray the Mother Abbess and Rolf. Some 40 other local performers round out a spectacular support cast.

The Sound of Music concludes what has been the most successful theatre season for AiM to date, boasting record audiences and generating more audition interest than expected. The season has involved over 400 cast and crew members from McNairy and surrounding counties and will have entertained more than 3,000 theatre goers before the final curtain falls on June 15. Needless to say, next year’s lineup is highly anticipated and the Performing Arts Committee plans to release 2008-09 season information at the June 13 opening of The Sound of Music.

The Sound of Music Cast List......Drum Roll Please!

Congratulations to one and all for a wonderful three days of auditions. Director Bryan Essary says this is one of the most challenging shows he has ever cast. As it turns out, that is a good problem to have! The difficulty was not in filling the roles with capable people but in narrowing down an extremely gifted field of performers to a cast of less than fifty. You are all to be commended for an excellent job.

Please note that the first cast meeting and read through will be 6:00 PM, Monday, May 5 at First Baptist Church in Selmer. Further information will be available about costuming, rehearsal schedules, tee shirts etc. at that meeting. Everyone who appears on the cast list below should make plans to attend.

Calling All Musicians!

The AiM Community Band had it's debut last December in a joint concert with the Holiday Singers. Now the group sets it's sites on the 4th of July.

Organized under the direction of AiM board member Ronnie Brooks, the community band accepts musicians of all age and skill levels. While beginners and those who might be a little (or a lot!) rusty with their instruments are welcomed, you must be able to read simple music and have some basic mastery of your chosen instrument.

Through May and June, the band will be organizing and rehearsing for an Independence Day concert in the Selmer City Park. The celebration is being sponsored by Selmer Parks and Recreation and AiM has been asked to provide music during a July 4th evening concert. A children's choir will perform and the community band will play several patriotic medleys, marches and a salute to the armed forces.

The rehearsal schedule is listed below and no formal invitation is required. Anyone interested in being part of the community band is encouraged to attend the rehearsals at Selmer Middle School's band hall, 635 Poplar Ave. in Selmer, TN. Enter the band hall directly at the rear of the building since the main entrance is locked after hours. All rehearsals are at 7:00 PM.

Another opportunity for area musicians will be available in June as the Performing Arts Committee stages The Sound of Music. A pit band with rhythm section, strings and horns will be needed. Inquire at one of the community band rehearsals about participation requirements.

"The Sound of Music" Auditions Announced!

This week, Arts in McNairy announced the audition and production dates for the final production of the 2008-09 theatre season. Open auditions for The Sound of Music, will be held April 28 and 29 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church, 310 West Court Avenue in Selmer, TN. The casting requirements call for a diverse group of performers, so roles for all ages and abilities will be available. Some roles require singing, speaking and simple choreography. Those seeking these roles should be prepared to sing a song, of their choice, from the show and demonstrate simple steps for the choreographer. Everyone will be required to read a few lines from the script, though non-speaking roles will be available. More detailed casting information, rehearsal schedules and production details will be available at the auditions. The cast list will be posted on this blog May 3, 2008 and a full cast meeting will be held May 5, 2008 to get rehearsals underway.

The Sound of Music is widely regarded as the best work of the prolific songwriting team Rogers and Hammerstein and is perhaps the most beloved musical of all time. AiM is proud to be brining it to the McNairy County stage for four June performances. Show dates are June 13, 14, & 15, 2008 and all performances will be at the McNairy Central High School Little Theater, 493 High School Road in Selmer, TN. AAT Spring Tour Maps Now Available!

Saturday March 15 is the date for the AiM Artisan Trail spring tour of studios. McNairy County artisans will open their shops and studios to the public from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM for an exclusive peak inside their creative process. It is a great time to meet the artists, learn about what they do and purchase some of the finest handmade goods in the Midsouth. Last years two AAT events drew enthusiastic visitors from a 6 state region as well as many from counties all around west and middle Tennessee.

Some of the favorite stops on the spring 2008 AAT will include:

Beulah Land Alpaca Farm in Ramer where you can meet Alpaca owners Dian and Roger Matlock, feed the animals and purchase some of the finest alpaca fleece products anywhere around.
Hockaday Handmade Brooms is one of the oldest businesses in Selmer. Broom making has been in Jack Martin's family for four generations and he still makes them one at a time just like his great great grandfather. Visit Jack, see him at work, enjoy the broom museum and take home a-one-of-a-kind handmade broom.
Eco-Art by Tim Pace is in the Finger community of McNairy County. Tim recycles scrap metal and everyday objects into whimsical statues, garden art and all kinds of functional items. Tim will not be on hand for the spring tour, but his shop and gallery will be open for tours and purchases.
Appalachian Threads, the weaving and spinning studio of Constance Beck in Adamsville, is always a favorite stop. Connie is adding something new for visitors to enjoy this year. Maiden Tennessee, an Artisan Gallery will feature the work of 14 local artists. Some will be on hand doing painting, pottery, caning and weaving demonstrations for the spring tour. Entertainment is also being provided.
2-B Pottery in the Lawton community is operated by Sandee Barton and Rebecca Berry. Their studio and gallery is located in Simply Home Interiors just off Hwy 64. The two "B's" will be doing demonstrations, showing and selling their fine traditional pottery during the tour.
Patricia Fischer's wood turning studio is located in the McNairy Community. Patricia is the newest addition to the artisan trail and she has been represented in galleries in Colorado and shown her traditional and contemporary wood turnings widely. She will be showing and demonstrating.
The Bethel Springs Community Center will serve as a trail head and a good central starting place for first time visitors. Carver Michael Altom will be there showing and selling his unique mammoth ivory carvings as well as his more traditional wood carved items. Maps and displays from all of the participating artists will also be available at that location.

Other stops on the trail like Big Hill Pond State Park, and the McNairy County Museum spotlight the history and beauty of McNairy County so come see why so many love to "come home to McNairy County, TN!" Rehearsals Rescheduled

Snow! In March! Can you believe it?!

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe rehearsals for Saturday morning March 8 have been moved back to Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM. With the help of the sunshine, this should allow enough time for the roads to become passable.

This will be the first rehearsal at the MCHS Little Theatre and please remember that next week all dress rehearsals will be held at MCHS. Mr. Bryan will have more details about next weeks schedule for you today.

We know that some areas received more snow than others, so use your best judgement and be very careful. Safety comes first, so if your roads are too treacherous for travel, please stay home. If you drive yourself, please consult your parents about the condition of your roads. If you can be safe and make the rehearsal, please do. We want everyone to break a leg in the theatrical sense not in the literal way! Less than one week till show time! It's going to be a great show!

Two Great Events...

One Fun-Filled Weekend!

The weekend of March 14-16 will be a busy one in McNairy County as Arts in McNairy stages two exciting events in a short three days. Never let it be said that you can't find something interesting to do in Southwest Tennessee!

The third show of the AiM theatre season, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, will open, Friday March 14 for three public performances at McNairy Central High School's Little Theatre. The play is being directed by AiM board member and Performing Arts Chair, Bryan Essary and boasts a cast of some 60 area children and adults. It is based on the beloved children's book of the same name from C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia series.

The curtain will open Friday (3/14) and Saturday (3/15) nights at 7:30 and Sunday (3/16) for one matinee performance at 2:00. The box office opens thirty minutes prior to show times and tickets are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. All performances are expected to be sellouts so local educators have arranged for two exclusive daytime performances for McNairy County students on Friday and Monday. Consult each school for more details on how to attend.

The popular AiM Artisan Trail will be the same weekend from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15. The biannual tour focuses on McNairy County's rich cultural heritage and features a dozen stops spotlighting several of the areas best working folk artists and artisans. You will be able to visit with artists in their studios, see them at work and purchase many of their fine wares. Traditional broom making, weaving, woodturning, carving, quilting, and pottery will be just a few of the interesting skills on display. Several other interesting stops are also included on the trail. There is no admission charge for this event so, pick up your map at the Bethel Springs Community Center, see the artists and displays there and head out for a fascinating day in McNairy County Tennessee! Updated maps showing all the stops will also be available on this blog one week prior to the event and at all other stops on the trail. The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe Cast Announced!

Congratulations to one and all for two great days of auditions! This was the largest audition turnout for any play in AiM's eight year history and we want to thank everyone for their interest and effort.

Below are the results of the auditions. The first cast meeting has been scheduled for 6:00 PM, Monday night, February 4, 2008 at Selmer First Baptist Church. The church is located at 310 West Court Ave. in Selmer, TN. All cast members should attend and bring one parent. The director and production team will be there to outline the schedule and answer any question you may have.

The Lion
is Coming!

Open auditions for Arts in McNairy’s upcoming production of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe will be held January 28 & 29 at the Selmer Community Center, 230 North 5th Street in Selmer, TN. Roles will be available for adults and children 8 years and older. Audition times are 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM on both dates and rehearsal schedules and other information will be available at the registration desk. Performance dates are March 7-9, 2008. The show is under the direction of Bryan Essary and all performances will be at the McNairy Central High School Little Theatre.

The play is based on the beloved children’s classic from C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series. The dramatic adaptation remains faithful to the original storyline recounting the adventures of four children who discover a magical land inside an upstairs wardrobe. While there, they encounter magical creatures of every description are befriended by Aslan the magnificent king of all Narnia and battle the evil pretender to Narnia’s throne, the White Witch. This is a story about love, faith, courage, redemption and the triumph of good over evil.

AiM Holiday Singers and Community Band Concert Scheduled for November 29th

Music will fill the air this holiday season as the Arts in McNairy Holiday Singers and Community Band stage their second annual Christmas concert. Scheduled for 7:00 PM, November 29 at First Baptist Church in Selmer, the concert will feature more than one hundred local voices and musicians. Conducting will be, Gene Hebert, Bryan Essary, Pam Stackhouse, Ronnie Brooks and Sarah Lemons.

A children’s hand bell choir, the adult and youth community chorus, several vocal ensembles, the newly formed community band and soloist April Essary, will all perform at the event. As Music Committee Chair, Pam Stackhouse, expressed it, “This concert is AiM’s Christmas gift to the community.” Though the concert is free to the public, donations to AiM’s music committee are always appreciated.

Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus

The second show of Arts in McNairy’s theatre season will set just the right tone for the holiday season. “Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus,” opens November 16 for a three performance run at McNairy Central High School’s Little Theatre. Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday Nov. 17 shows will be at 7:30 PM and a Sunday Nov. 18 matinee is scheduled for 2:00 PM.

The show which is a perennial holiday favorite features a talented cast of local adults and children who bring this heartwarming Christmas story to life. It is inspired by a simple, poignant letter written over 100 years ago by 8 year old Virginia O’Hanlon (Bonnie Smith) to the editor of the New York Sun (Aubrey Davis) and by the timeless editorial response by Sun reporter Frank Church (Steve Smith). “Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus” magically reaffirms one of life’s deepest joys – “the eternal light with which childhood fills the world.”

The show will be enjoyed by young and old, but children will have an added incentive to attend. Santa Claus, himself, will be on hand following each show to take early gift requests and have his picture taken with the kids. Tickets will be available at the door for $8.00 (adults) and $5.00 (students). Don’t miss this great holiday event perfect for the whole family!

Holiday Artisan Trail Event
Scheduled for Nov. 17 & 18

The popular AiM Artisan Trail will again bring a multitude of visitors to McNairy County to sample the best of local heritage and culture. Area artisans will open their doors to guests at 10:00 AM Saturday Nov. 17 and 12:00 noon on Sunday. The trail will close around 5:00 PM at all locations. That will provide enough time for participants to grab a bite of dinner and head out to McNairy Central's Little Theatre for a Saturday night performance of Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus at 7:30. If you happen to pack the whole trail into Saturday, you can catch a matinee of Yes Virginia on Sunday afternoon at 2:00.

3rd Annual Photography Contest

In it’s third year, AiM’s annual photography contest is expected to continue it’s upward trend in both the number and quality of photos. Last year’s contest drew more than 250 entries from amateur photographers around the area. Contest coordinators George Souders and Mark Boehler anticipate this years field being even stronger with prize money for 1st and 2nd place being awarded in a half dozen categories and an additional $100.00 for best-in-show honors.

The deadline for entries at UTM in Selmer is Fri. Oct. 5 but mail-in entries must be postmarked by Mon. Oct. 1 for eligibility. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at an opening reception held at the UTM center in Selmer on Sun. Oct. 7, from 2:00-4:00 PM. All entries will then be on display at UTM Selmer through Nov. 18. Souders stressed that all photos should be picked up on or as near to Nov. 19 as possible to make room for future exhibit.

Photographers are invited to price and sell their work and this year, they will have an added opportunity and incentive to do so since the photography show will be a featured stop on the fall AiM Artisan trail, Nov. 17 & 18. Last spring’s AAT drew tourists and patrons of the arts from a five state area to McNairy County.

Hollywood Comes to Selmer

Dr. Lewis Hunter, is a screenwriting professor at UCLA; not surprisingly, one of the top universities for film studies in the world. Dr. Hunter has been a creative executive at Disney, Buena Vista and other entertainment industry powerhouses and is one of the few educators, who is also a working screenwriter. He has extended his teaching skills beyond the university setting by authoring the book Screenwriting 434 and traveling the globe with his wife Pam conducting screenwriting seminars. Now he is coming to McNairy County!

Teaming up with Dr. Hunter is his former student, Sherri Sanders, who has recently relocated home to McNairy County from Los Angeles. Sherri holds an MFA from UCLA in Theatre Arts with a screenwriting emphasis. She has recently optioned, “Miss Scarecrow Blues”, a southern family drama screenplay, and has worked in production, as well as script consulting for major studios.

The two will be conducting a screenwriting workshop on Nov. 3, 4, & 5. The seminar is cosponsored by AiM and UTM Selmer/McNairy who will play host. Both beginning and seasoned writers will find it helpful. The workshop which has been informally dubbed, “A Weekend with Lew,” will include the Sat. and Sun. workshops for only $175.00 and $10.00 for a Friday evening mixer & basic story talk from 6:00-10:00 PM. Sherri will also be available for follow up coaching and further assistance with script development. Ask for more information at the workshop.
